The National Flshermen’s Association (Nekmat) has urged the Agriculture Ministry to retain the 1985 Fisheries Act for the continued protection of traditional fi shermen whose fishing areas are gazetted nearer to shore. The Association made the call following specula tions that the Government would relax or amend the Act, which would eventually allow non traditional fishermen to fish closer to shore thus upset ting the livelihood of traditional fishermen. Nekmat president Hassan Ismail said a resolution to appeal to the Ministry was passed at its general meeting in Kuala Lumpur recently. He said the 1985 Fisheries Act stipulated the areas permitted for various categories of fisher men.
